My point is that there is no true guarantee in CDs either. In the case of really extensive bank defaults (parallel to BK) the FDIC either will tax more (less take home pay) or print more (inflation) to pay for the deposits. Net net, the money will be gone. Indirect or direct is the only difference wrt the loss.

Now individual bank failures are a separate issue, as are individual investors going bankrupt. But since fatal auto accidents occur every one, should everyone start using public transporation?
