I am not aware of companies trading options in their own stock, and there may even be rules against it. Repurchase means amgen buys stock and puts it in treasury for reissuance when employee stock options are exercised. Companies buy their stock when they have no better use for funds and they believe the stock is cheap or the company wants to support the price. The company apparently believes the stock price may not go up a lot in the next year and it will be cheaper for it to buy stock in the open marke rather than issue new shares to satisfy employee stock options.
