CD-RW's Taking Over OEM's!!!!

Thanks to IomegaNut over at The Motely Fool for this post:

boards.fool.com

JUST LOOK AT TODAY'S NY TIMES-- CD/RW BUILT-IN IS EVERYWHERE!!!!

And no machine has CD/RW and Zip--this is it folks... according to OEM's, CD/RW REPLACES Zip drives in computers!

The vast majority of PC's in today's NY Times come with CD-RW Standard- no Zip. In fact, there are only two PC's that even have a Zip (out of 30 PC's advertised today) Here are the results:

DataVision flier:
page 12
HP Pavilion 6540 w/CD-RW $459
HP Pavilion 8590C w/ CD-RW $1499
IBM Aptiva 595 w/CD-RW $1449
IBM Aptiva 550 w/CD-RW $949
IBM Aptiva 190 w/CD-RW $499
Sony R538DS w/ CD-RW $1249
Compaq Presario 5838 w/CD-RW $999
Compaq Presario 5868 w/CD-RW $1549
only ONE Compaq 5460 w/Zip $299 (a closeout model)

Totals: 16 PC's
# of CD-RW built-in = 8
# of Zip = 1

Circuit City flier

Compaq Athlon 500 w/CD-RW $1199
IBM 500 w/CD-RW $699
Compaq 466 w/CD-RW $699
Page 13
HP 500 w/CD-RW $799
only ONE Compaq 475 model w/Zip $499

Totals: 6 PC's
# w/CD-RW built-in = 3
# w/Zip = 1

CompUSA flier

HP 600 w/CD-RW $1799
page 4
Compaq 500 w/CD-RW $1199
HP 500 w/CD-RW $929
Compaq 600 w/CD-RW $1949
NO ZIPS BUILT-IN

Totals: 6 PC's
# w/CD-RW = 4
# w/Zip = 0

J&R Computer (back of Money and Business)
IBM Aptiva E190 w/CD-RW $499
NO ZIPS BUILT-IN
Totals: 2 PC's
# w/CD-RW = 1
# w/Zip = 0

Grand Totals for the Sunday's NY Times:
# of PC's = 30
# w/CD-RW = 16
# w/Zip = 2

CD-RW inclusion = 53%
Zip inclusion = 7%

Fact: CD-RW REPLACES Zip drives in OEM's. The number of Zip built-in has been dropping off dramatically this month as prices for CD-RW drives have come down under $200. The price point at which CD-RW comes Standard has been dropping dramatically. Iomega Investors have been curiously silent throughout all this. I wonder why? What do I expect Iomega Investors here to do with the Facts that CD-RW is replacing Zip as the preferred built-in storage? Probably either ignore it, deny it, or wish it weren't true (You know...the usual). No wonder they sit on a $3 stock.

Iomega is clearly being left behind as CD-RW drives are included more and more in PC's. And Zip is getting kicked out of the box. Don't say you were never warned about this trend!
