BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1999--The Board of Directors of
The Gillette Company has appointed Edward F. DeGraan, Executive Vice

In this new position, Mr. DeGraan, 56, is responsible for
management of all product lines worldwide, including research and
development, manufacturing, product and process engineering, supply
chain management, global marketing strategies, marketing research and
consumer advertising.
"By placing management of all of the Company's product lines
under a single reporting structure, we can take even greater advantage
of the synergies inherent in the development, manufacture and
strategic marketing of our products," said Michael C. Hawley, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer. "We expect a very beneficial acceleration
in the flow of science and technology between and among units,
functions and geographies."
Mr. DeGraan previously served as Executive Vice President, Global
Business Management, for Gillette Grooming Products and Duracell. His
new position adds responsibility for the Diversified Group, consisting
of Braun, Oral-B and Stationery Products.
Concurrently, Archie Livis, who previously served as Executive
Vice President, Global Business Management, Diversified Group, will
move to a new assignment, effective January 1, 2000. Mr. Livis, 61,
will develop key strategic initiatives to optimize growth
opportunities for the Company.
The consolidation of the Company's global business management
function is another step in the reorganization program announced in
September 1998. The move will enable the Company to more effectively
leverage global resources and respond to changing business conditions,
optimizing performance.
Trade marketing and sales are handled on a geographic basis
through two Commercial Operations groups: Commercial Operations,
Western Hemisphere, is headed by Executive Vice President Robert G.
King, 54; Executive Vice President Jorgen Wedel, 51, directs
Commercial Operations, Eastern Hemisphere.
Mr. DeGraan, who joined Gillette in 1968, has served in a variety
of manufacturing, technical, marketing and general management
positions in nearly all of the Company's core businesses.
Mr. DeGraan began his career in the Gillette Safety Razor
Division, where he held a number of positions of increasing
responsibility and scope in manufacturing and technical operations. In
1979, he was appointed Factory Manager of Gillette Puerto Rico. In
1982, after an assignment in blade and razor marketing and sales, Mr.
DeGraan was appointed Director of Program Management for blades and
razors. He was promoted to Vice President, Manufacturing, for the
Safety Razor Division in 1987.
With the creation of the Gillette North Atlantic Group in 1988,
Mr. DeGraan was appointed the group's Senior Vice President,
Manufacturing and Technical Operations. In this capacity, he was
responsible for all manufacturing, distribution and materials
management in the North Atlantic region for grooming products, as well
as for research and development, engineering and program management
for grooming products globally.
In 1994, Mr. DeGraan was elected a Corporate Vice President. He
was elected Executive Vice President, Duracell North Atlantic Group,
in December 1996. In January 1999, he was elected to his most recent
position, Executive Vice President, Global Business Management,
