Amazon.com tops Forrester poll in three categories
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct 20 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc.
<AMZN.O> ranked No. 1 in market research firm Forrester
Research's "PowerRankings" survey of electronic commerce sites
in the categories of general merchandise; toys and games; and
books, music and video, Forrester said Wednesday.
"Its site works so well that consumers keep coming back,
even though the prices aren't always the best in the category,"
said David Weisman, group director for research at Forrester.
"Amazon has done a tremendous job transferring what it has
learned from selling books online to other categories."
In the general merchandise category, the runner-up was
Andy's Garage Sale (http//:www.andysgarage.com), which acts as
an online discount department store and auction site. Forrester
noted that Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s <WMT.N> site was "a real
contender," citing prompt delivery and easy returns.
In the toys and games category, Amazon.com beat out eToys
Inc. <ETYS.O>, with Forrester calling Amazon easiest to use,
although the survey noted that eToys surpassed Amazon in
delivery and customer service.
Amazon beat DVD Express; CDnow <CDNW.O>; Reel.com, a
subsidiary of Hollywood Entertainment Corp. <HLYW.O> and
Barnesandnoble.com <BNBN.O> in the books, music and video
category.
"ButAmazon's prices leave the door open for companies like
DVD Express, CDNow, and Reel.com to challenge on cost with
cheap delivery and free returns," Forrester said in a
statement.
Forrester PowerRankings use consumer survey data from
Greenfield Online's 400,000-person online panel to identify the
most popular e-commerce sites. Each site is then evaluated by a
team of Forrester shoppers.
