I would be shocked if Cisco warns, given the bulge of business carried over into this quarter from the last. Also, few companies are as good as Cisco in maintaining secrecy, so I question the likelihood of an insider leak. However, quiet period is exactly when a company pre-announces. Cisco can warn at anytime prior to its official earnings announcement, although they are supposed to do it as soon as the company is aware that it will fail to meet expectations by a material amount.

I think the only real risk is that management will warn about the January quarter - even here I think the likelihood is slight. There are real concerns - Y2K spending slowdown, Higher chip prices affecting margins, Cerent dilution. However, I believe Cisco has deferred enough business to make through against modest consensus expectations. I do expect DSOs to rise from the artificially low 32 days back to the high 40s as linearity returns to a more natural pattern.

If it gets too squishy on Monday, I might have to take some off the table, but I think this may blow over.

Maria/CNBC has been listening to Cramer/TSC too much--IMHO

Two different Cisco spokepersons say- "Nothing has changed"

"Our earnings date has been established and nothing has changed," said Kent Jenkins, spokesman for Cisco.

and

"Our guidance remains exactly the same," said Cisco spokesman Doug Wills, declining to comment further.

Gary and All: I emailed investor relations and they responded that they don't ever comment on rumors but that they were going to report earnings on 11/9 as planned. JFD

Is this directly related to CSCO? The w-ofdm part ?
"from motley fool board"
Good day everyone,

I would like to be clear about my identity. I am Hatim Zaghloul, CEO and Chairman of Wi-LAN Inc. I monitor posts on the Internet that mention Wi-LAN. I do believe the Internet is the most important communications vehicle of the future and would like to learn to live with it harmoniously.

Now, that you all know that I am a promoter of Wi-LAN Inc. I would like to give a quick overview about Wi-LAN.

Wi-LAN is in the business of developing super high-speed wireless networking products and technologies. We developed and patented wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (W-OFDM) which is a technology that could be described as the most spectrally efficient communications technology. Our brand of OFDM is the foundation for such standards as the IEEE802.11a (54Mbps wireless local area networks), HiperLANII (the European version of 802.11a). Wi-LAN also invented multicode direct sequence spread spectrum which has recently gained popularity because of its adoption into third generation cellular telephone (3G) proposals. Multicode is the concept of enabling a single user to transmit multiple CDMA codes at the same time to increase the throughput. Wi-LAN recognized the potential of multicode and patented it together with a very simple implementation method. Later, I will post a Wi-LAN press release that hopefully clarifies Wi-LAN's position on the ITU 3G efforts.

In mid-September, Wi-LAN announced the execution of a technology license and transfer agreement with Philips Semiconductors whereby Philips will build and market W-OFDM chips based on Wi-LAN's W-OFDM. Initial chips will be based on Wi-LAN's proprietary implementations suitable for Wi-LAN's products that currently serve the wireless wide area networking market. Later chips will be targeting the IEEE802.11a and HiperLANII markets. Wi-LAN expects that the agreement with Philips will give it a decent return from the emerging home networking market and the wireless LAN market.

In the wide area networking market, Wi-LAN has contracts with Telia (the Swedish PTT), and Tele2(UK), a wireless ISDN (and faster) telecommunications provider in the UK. These contracts are based on Wi-LAN's legacy Hopper Plus (4.5Mbps direct sequence spread spectrum products) but are targeting W-OFDM products (already at 30Mbps with 100Mbps planned).

Wi-LAN revenue was $5.7MM in 1998. Its fiscal year end is October 31. Telia alone is committed to purchase over $13MM of products from Wi-LAN in 2000.

Wi-LAN owns 1.8 Million shares of Cell-Loc Inc. (publicly traded under the symbol CLQ on the Alberta Stock Exchange in Canada) and 1.3 Million shares of Wireless Inc. of Santa Clara, CA. Cell-Loc is in the business of locating cellular telephones according to the enhanced 911 ruling of the FCC. Wireless develops and markets high-speed wireless data communications products.

Wi-LAN's stock is currently listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange in Canada under the symbol WIN.

All the best.

Hatim
