Review: Hong Kong Electronics Fair '99

Home entertainment: DVD players, flat speakers and Web TV
The products of months of innovation surfaced in the form of new DVD players and high-end speakers at the fair. The widening acceptance of DVD as an affordable format for home entertainment has spurred many Asian manufacturers to develop players of increasingly better quality and greater affordability. The high-tech fascination and space-saving design of flat speakers also resulted in more companies entering this category.

DVD comes of age
SMC Multi-media is one of the many companies that showed DVD players. The firm plans to release DTS-equipped version by the yearend, according to Jackey Ho, senior manager for business development and sales. Oxygen Ltd, associated with the international Zoo Design group, showed a DVD player priced at about $160 FOB, which it expects to start producing by next year.

Shinco International AV Co. Ltd had several models to offer, including a desktop three-disc DVD changer with DTS output, microphone level controls and an echo function. It is compatible with MP3 and SVCD discs as well as DVD. And Gynco Electronics (HK) Ltd, using Samsung and C-Cube components, has come up with the AV-8001G, which has a 5.1-channel decoder and a 24-bit audio D/A converter. Development wound up months ago.

Taiwan-based exhibitor CIS Technology Inc. offered a portable DVD player with a built-in monitor. It accepts DVD, VCD, CD and CD-R discs and has AC-3 and DTS decoders. Guangdong Huabao Electric Appliance Co. Ltd, of mainland China, also showed a model that has been in production for about half a year. The DV-300 is priced at $165 FOB. Billed as a third-generation model, it comes with an integrated crystal wafer system, DSP, two-channel karaoke and a dual-focus laser head.

For these companies the future for DVD looks bright, and several report strong buyer interest in their models. At this stage, they said, competition from low-cost suppliers is still not a big factor. One concern however is the threat posed by Korean companies, who are able to leverage their mass manufacturing capabilities and assured component supplies in order to drop prices to squeeze out the nascent competition.
