You may be right, although producing the "fastest x86 in the world" has been a real coup for AMD and they could probably introduce some 750s to retain the crown and still maintain ASPs on the 700.

What might be more relevant is that Compaq/IBM might not look kindly on Athlon MHz ramping faster than they can shift their existing stocks.

ted,

it was mentioned yesterday on the yahoo zoo, and it IS the weekend, so I'll entertain you with something to think about.

Look at CPQ and AMD stock price yesterday and especially today.

Question:
You ready to accept 1 for 1 CPQ shares for your AMD shares?

:o)

Going to get me the Inside Intel and Paranoid Intel books this weekend.

Mysef

Re: "Intc is the one that is scrambling, not AMD. Why devalue your 700 MHz production before it even gets to the market in quantity in order to jump ahead of the competition by 18 MHz? Do you think that makes good business sense?"

Do you really want to start a discussion of AMD decisions and if they make business sense?

How about spending $800 Million on Nexgen and posting nothing but losses ever since?

How about killing the 29K to pump more funds into the loser processor group?

How about selling the PLD group to raise more money to buy Jerry some more dope?

How about selling the Communications group to buy more of Jerry's dope?

How about selling their headquarters so they could buy more dope for Jerry?

How about never making a profit for any processor they have ever designed yet still betting the company on processors?

How about a share price that is half what it was 15 years ago?

How about losses as far into the future as the eye can see?

How about senior management leaving to get off the sinking ship?

How about the design staff leaving in droves due to poor moral, poor pay and worthless options?

But you're right. Intel is the one who is scrambling. They only made $1.9 BILLION last quarter and have $12 BILLION in the bank.

Ted: <<Intc is the one that is scrambling, not AMD. Why devalue your 700 MHz production before it even gets to the market in quantity in order to jump ahead of the competition by 18 MHz? Do you think that makes good business sense?>>

Athlon 700 is priced around 664 bucks now. Price 750 at 800 ish, solve all the problem.

<<Have you never noticed in a race, the leader will let someone else take over the lead for a while? That's a leader who is confident he can win or least that he has a very good shot at it.>>

The race you described is won on the merit of cleverness when two being roughly equal. A real good leader backed by real strength will never let the other guy take over the lead.

AMD does have potential real strength, but not there yet.
