Roger,
Thanks for setting the record straight on what happened at E-bay. You presented the situation clearly enough that anyone who takes the time to read it would be enlightened.

Knowledge is so much better than the SPAM we get from the ignorant.

Michael

Back to what I was talking about, bonehead, all systems eventually need reboots/downtime because of maintenance and the fact that neither app software or the OS is perfect ... furthermore not every situation can be predicted.

NT can't be blamed for a poor app architecture - that's OS independant.

The real question is why is it taking so long to establish the simple warm/hot backup procedures ? I thought RAS was easy on Sun boxes - at least that's what everyone keeps saying on this thread.

As I conclude, RAS of Wintel/Lintel is good enough and therefore it's more of a marketing thing used by companies to justify large price tags and move big iron. True RAS must extend upward through the app layer with a distributed architecture.

Ebay to switch???

This is interesting... I don't see any where that Ebay is "leaning" any direction at this point, (Cnet tend to have pro Wintel titles and Negative Sun titles)but there is the possibility that they could move away from Sun. My guess is that Ebay is putting out feelers to get better prices from Sun.. It may work, given Ebays high profile.

news.cnet.com

I hope it doesn't happen, but one thing's for sure... They won't be moving to Win 2000...

Cheers,

Roger
