Rambus uses more silicon space, is more difficult (expensive) to test, and requires more costly packaging. The most optimistic projections I've seen are for the premium to be down to 50% a year from now.

A year from now DDR, which will (unlike rambus) be at price parity or a very small premium to SDRAM, will be the standard. It has higher performance and lower cost.

The hope for rambus was that Intel would block any of the technologies with better price/performance from ever seeing the light of day. It's too late for that now.
