Thanks for the comments, Joan. I have to stay away from "high culture" on my list - influence on the whole world is trickle-down at best (VERY slow trickle, IMO).

I can think of almost no instance where a visibly "high culture" person could be elected to a major office in this country -- perhaps in a parliamentary system.

You want art and philosophy that powers the people -- Norman Rockwell takes the prize in this country -- easy! YIKES!

This not meant to say I don't personally enjoy books with no pictures in them. Some irony, don't you think, that one of the favorites of the "high culture" crowd -- JFK -- was so fond of Ian Fleming?

Henry Ford and many others certainly deserve consideration. I suggested at the bottom of my list that scientific and medical people could fill a list.

There are a few I could drop from my list without whining. Feel free to whack away!
