Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing. I have expanded my samples to 290 drive prices through 5 distributors.

Disk drive pricing was quite stable last week. The weighted average desktop drive dropped 0.0% last week. The prices of drives less than 11 gb offset each other with increases and decreases. The average price of drives between 11 and 21 gb rose 0.2%. The average price of drives over 21 gb dropped 0.4%, however they are given less weight because they only amount to about 20% of the market. The average SCSI drive (enterprise) dropped 0.1%.

Although this news is encouraging, it is meaningless unless the pricing remains stable for a long period of time. The length of stable pricing is most important to keep the prices above (more profitable) the price declines planned in the business model. Next month I will start summarizing pricing changes from the beginning of the quarter. We should expect seasonally stable pricing during this time of year.
