I would like to ask for feedback on the following hardware issues:

1. Does it make sense to try to add a second Ultra ATA HD to a system? It is not an option from the manufacturer, but I have been told that I could purchase another one and add it as long as the device limit did not exceed 4 devices. Specifically:

DVD + CD + HD + HD is OK, but DVD + CDRW + HD + HD is not.

Does anyone know the technical reason for this limitation?

2. Related to the above question - is there any clear way to find out which DVD read CDs? If I can use a DVD that reads CDs and there are no other hardware conflicts I am set. I have a lot of CDs that I need to access on any PC I use.

Finally - are there any good PC technical references that discuss detailed hardware and software theory and technical problems? I guess I am looking (while realizing that sections do apply) for the PC equivalent of Hennessy and Patterson's Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach.

Thanks,

George D.
