I agree with you that data should be distributed but I
suspect that it will take time for people to realise that
what they do with computing power can also apply to storage.
The problem is that most storage paradigms follow the
same computing paradigm they support, and for the past few
decades the dominant paradigms have been central storage
either via mainframes or pcs. Networked storage until
recently had significant latency problems due to the network
but the cost of IP traffic is coming down so fast that
distributed data makes more sense (comparing T3 speeds vs.
10BaseT for example.) Once network speeds approach board
latencies truly networked distributed storage becomes more
economical, until then large central databases will attempt
to optimise for quick access locally and then to return the
results.
