Lizzie, I would suggest it has to do with far more people living under a paradigm of "determinism". It seems like nearly everyone is a "victim" these days. Being responsible and accountable for your actions and inactions has become passe'.

The government is looked upon by people who live under this paradigm as the leveler or fixer of all social and economic problems. If we focused more in schools on how to access the wealth this country is generating, we may see more improvements. But it starts with the schools! Which are completely dominated by the thought process of an intellectual elite, more concerned with keeping their power, than in helping kids *learn*.

The courts have also played a large role in encouraging this way of thinking. "I'm sick from smoking", so it's the company that produces the products fault and not my own. (as if you had NO clue smoking was bad for you). "I broke the law and robbed or killed because of my horrific upbringing, it's not my fault I'm a *victim*.

This deterministic way of thinking has led to all kinds of social and economic problems. We live in the most economically advanced nation on earth, with the greatest opportunities for financial freedom the world has ever seen. Yet we are full of a bunch of *victims*.

"It's all just part of a vast right wing conspiracy I guess. Even the First lady and President are a *victim*!

Michael

I don't think the Columbine kids, at least, were from poor families.

And stop dragging religion through the mud. It's more than likely the liberal media and arts that are to blame. I believe these guys were into Marilyn Manson, I've heard just about all his music, having been friends with a guy who has really gotten into this Goth movement (he has his own local Goth band, no less). I think the Godlessness is much more destructive.

I agree with most of that, but there is another difference I've noted.

Kid's don't have an outlet for aggression anymore. When I was a kid, we used to fight all the time. Being a loud mouthed mulatto, I got beat up a lot. But, I fought back a lot too, and gave my share of whoopins.

My son however, was suspended for three days for laying out a kid that hit a girl. The school said they have a "Zero Tolerance" policy on violence. Since I raised my son to protect those weaker than himself, I expect him to be suspended more often, and I told him as much.

I think that if the kids had more ways to take out their aggression, then we would see less crime in high schools. But all their avenues seem to be illegal now.
