Globalstar Communications Magazine 10/99 issue highlights

This 25 page glossy brochure/journal has a lot of good stuff in it, including:

Upcoming trade shows and conferences. G* will have reps/booths at eleven trade shows or exhibits during the remainder of this year, including events in Argentina, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Turkey, China, Peru, South Africa, France, Russia and India.

Says the company expects 40K phones "will have been distributed and connecting calls through...as many as 16 gateways" by year end.

Says ad campaign will start initially in 20 countries in N. and S. America, and Europe. Rollout in China, Russia and S. Africa will start "early next year" [hmmm, some more schedule creep, I'm afraid]

Says the Mexican GW in San Martin is ahead of schedule and ready for service in October and that Globalstar de Mexico has signed service agreements with two local operators.

Has a good blurb on fixed services including this quote from G*'s "fixed terminal product manager" that I liked very much: "All you have to purchase from Globalstar is the satellite access unit and a subscription from a locals service provider. Everything else required to complete the Globalstar satellite phone, including the telephone set, the wiring, the junction box, the power supply ... can be obtained from a local market"

Has an article on G* service in Australia, which is said to be ready for nation (continent) wide coverage by "early March 2000."

Has an article on Maritime coverage, including from the Martel GW in Iceland which is said to cover the Atlantic as far south as 32 degrees (HEY, G* USA, HOW ABOUT SHOWING THIS ON YOUR COVERAGE MAP!!!)
Says fishing industries in the US, Peru, Spain, Norway, Morocco, Canada and Chile are among G*'s initial markets.

Dear Skip: With respect to the ARPU of Omnitracs (actual) vs. Globalstar (projected), I do not have the time to research the exact details right now as I'm preparing for travel first thing tomorrow morning, but I do recall reading in some QUALCOMM filing or research report that the ARPU per Omnitacs user was somewhere in the $30-$40 per month range -- the LTL business segment they cater to being quite price sensitive. As I recall from the press reports out of Geneva last week, Globalstar was expecting at least 3 times that amount or so per customer?

Best regards,
Geoff
