This thread has really filled up with a lot of people who never used to come on here. Aside from the few that own the stock and are holding on for the long haul...I suspect there are a lot of momentum players in here who loved the two years prior to '99 and just can't face this downturn. As far as for what a lot of people think McGinn should be doing...well, I think they have watched too much news on the telly about what all the newscasters and righteous used to say about Clinton..."Oh, if he had only told the truth right away!" That is a lot of crap. Anybody in a power position, whether it be a multi-billion dollar corporation CEO or the boss of the country is always going to be political in what he says and does. If you tell white lies to your kids based on what you think they should be told, well, it doesn't get any different when you "grow-up" and take a job in any organization or for that matter just join a social organization. Once there is more in the room than just you it starts. If there is only you in the room then you don't have to compete with anyone but your own mind. As soon as another person enters the room the competition begins. A looks at B and B looks at A. The question start. Does he look better than I, is he stronger or in the case of the distaff side, is she prettier, smarter etc. Then in walks C and now A starts comparing B and C. Of course A knows that he is the superior one doesn't he? So he lines up B and C...maybe putting C ahead of B because of what he basis his judgement on. Oops! Here comes D. Now A may have to reshuffle things a bit. In the meantime B is analyzing A, C and D. As the room fills up with alphabets that mind game goes on...it is sometimes called "Getting your ducks in line!" Politics is inherent in mankind. No matter where you go you will find it, whether it be premeditated or spontaneous or indigenous. Whether it be in your company, in your golf foursome, in your church if you go, at your lunch table...even on this thread...there will always be somebody taking charge whether formally elected or not. I'm for the guy who knows when to keep his mouth shut and when to open it for the good of whatever it is he's trying to manage, be it himself or his company. Maybe I should have kept my fingers off the keys but I just had to write something. As for downsizing...well back in 1975, with the oil crisis as an excuse, blue chip companies started doing it, and it didn't take long before AT&T followed suit...something it (T) had never done before (after all, she was "Ma Bell")..and it has been going on since then...it will never stop. Once Ronny started it with the air traffic controllers and got away with it the die was cast. I have absolutely no idea how the market will react when LUCENT announces on Tuesday morning. You would think that if they beat the street by any amount that things will look brighter but you can't tell in this market where somebody like IBM can drop $18+ in two weeks. Volatility is the name of the game for awhile.
