I just found a report at the BLS that uses the current methodology of calculating the CPI on the data going back to the late 70s. (for consistency purposes) It also gives an explanation of all the recent changes to the calcs. It's a large PDF file that you have to download.
I'm not sure these adjustments cover all the controversial areas, but it's a start.

Personally, I'm throwing in the towel on all government stats. Even if I wasn't cynical type, as I've learned more about economics in general, I've come to realize that this stuff is too complicated, subjective, and controversial to be either accurate or really useful.

The long bond is yielding 6.35%. That's my reality!
