If there are Cumine 733s on pricewatch next week I'll bet they have something like "available 11/XX or 12/xx" after the asterisk.

Charles, At Christmas is the best time to have the fastest as there are many gift buyers(for others and themselves) who want to buy the best=fastest, as a consequence I think for sales reason the best time is the next two months for Athlon/intel to engage in a speed bin contest for the crown.
During the rest of the year there not as many newbie buyers.
A possible exception is the college start season, but in my experience the colleges mention a minimum speed etc they suggest and many buy that or better as well as the fastest etc.
Bill

Chuck, re:<and personally I am with rest of the longs in wanting to AMD to have the crown.>

Thanks for the reply. I also would like to see AMD to have the speed crown. Here is a list of prices that I compiled today, based on the information from different online sources:
         PIII         Athlon                      Oct 23,  1999
========== ========== Rumored
PIII old new new old to be on 10/24
450 $169 $168 --- --- ---------------
500 $230 $215 $198 $219 $205
533B $389 $321 ---- ---- ---- [ old -> prices during
550 $375 $339 $271 $320 $268 the first week
600 $583 $459 $414 $485 $407 of Oct'99 ]
600B $645 $479 ---- ---- ----
650 ---- ---- $520 $679 $509
700 ---- ---- $692 $8?? $664

333 350 366 400 433 450 466 475 500
==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ====
Celeron(ppga) $43 $38 $47 $59 --- $84 --- $124
K6-2 $29 $29 $108 $37 --- $49 --- $70 $102
K6-3 --- --- --- $73 --- $133 --- --- ----
MII $20 --- $34 $39* $53 --- --- --- ----

* Including Fan, and Heat Sink

Coppermine - expected pricing as per the Register
733EB 700E 667EB 650E
$810 $785 $630 $610

AMD badly needs higher speed grades of K6-3 to compete against PIII-Katmai as AMD moves into higher speed grades of Athlon to compete against PIII-Coppermine.

Also, I noticed three weeks in a row, more Compaq systems being advertised in the advertisement flyers in our local news papaer (San Jose Mercury) with 60% - 40% mix of AMD - Intel. However, I noticed this week that there was an increase of ads from HP - mostly Celeron systems.

Regards,
Goutama
