goldsnow,

<< Though our conduct seems so very different from that of the higher animals, the primary instincts are much aloke in them and in us. The most evident difference springs from the important part which is played in man by a relatively strong power of imagination and by the capacity to think, aided as it is by language and other symbolical devices. >>

I do not think that anyone would argue with that statement. IMO, it is our capacity to unleash the latter elements in that statement, that separate us from the more baser elements (animals).

No doubt, there is a purity of truth in the "laws of the jungle" that is both elegant and appealing. But there is (IMO) a greater purity and truth, when one can transcend those baser elements. Until we (that's a global "we") learn to do that, we will always live in a state of fear and distrust of our neigbours, whether they be next door or half way around the globe.

And as a result, there will always be that need to accumulated a lot more than we need - whether it be food, military weapons, or whatever - to allay that fear. Ironically though, IMHO, it is that very reaction that perpetuates the problem.

As I said, I do not have the answers - but it is interesting to talk about the issues.

Have a good day.
