Wayne, their methodology for substitution is also one-sided. When consumer confidence is high, consumers often trade up to more expensive goods or substitute better foods for meatloaf, for instance. Of couse, in their infinite wisdom, they probably figure filet mignon is cheaper than hamburger after accounting for quality improvements. Another substitution that they probably can't or won't account for substituting more expensive activities, such as eating out, travelling, adding more options to car purchases, leases, etc.
