Lucius Lamar asked me about Gemstar in another folder and I'm responding here. Others will certainly feel free to pipe in.

What's your opinion on Gemstar? I must admit that I don't share the general enthusiasm for this stock at the current price.

I think it's exceptionally difficult to determine a fair price at this point in time. The company is in such a state of transition that the traditional valuation junkies like me are left in a horrible state of withdrawal.

I think there's a good possibility for significant news events in the next year about continued successes on the legal front, selling of certain TV Guide assets, and major headway beginning in July when set-tops become available in retail stores. All of that could propel the stock much higher. Yet I also think the stock could temporarily fall far if there is a severe retrenchment in tech stocks as always happens eventually.

When it falls 40% or 50% as has happened in the past, it's mostly a question of from what price it falls. That's a tough call and is the reason I'm not a stock timer. Gemstar is an extremely long-term hold for me. I'll buy more on weakness or news that tells me not to wait any longer.
