I have yet another boating accident story, that could have been a lot different if the person had had a G* phone.

Last week, I heard about the following : someone in the Fort Myers, Florida area (real near here) had their boat's engine go dead. He eventually drifted about 180 miles offshore (!) over a 7 or 10 day period (I cannot remember which).

This guy had flares, which he fired periodically when near other boats. Everyone ignored him until day 7 (or 10). He thinks boaters are afraid of piracy (unfortunately).

The guy was a former Eagle scout, and had a fishing pole and a small, limited amount of fresh water. He survived on fresh (raw) fish he caught, and his water.

He absolutely thought he might die out there.

As Maurice said in an SI post a long time ago (when some boaters unfortunately did perish), it is astounding to realize that with a G* phone, this guy could just have phoned someone and said : "Come get me, please."

Jon.
