D. His Prophetic Office.
The Old Testament depicts a prophet as a person who receives God's Word (revelation) and passes it on to his people. In order to function as a prophet, a person had to receive a clear word from God. He stood in God's stead before the people; God used his mouth to communicate what He wished to say.

The Old Testament promised a great prophet who would convey God's Word finally and decisively to His people (Deut. 18:15). Jesus was that prophet (Acts 3:22–24). He acted prophetically even before He came to earth as a man, for He spoke through the writers of the Old Testament (1 Pet. 1:11). During His earthly ministry He taught His followers the things of God, by both word and deed. Now He continues His prophetic work from heaven by operating through the Holy Spirit.
