Mike, when I referred to a VoIP cloud in my previous post, of course I was referring to the same thing that you cited:

But IP voice over a VPN is a totally different situation. That I see happening in a much closer time frame."

Private IP networks, or those which are isolated from the Public 'net. These are already being used today by some of the discount international carriers, as well as some of the all you can eats here domestically.

The reason for my post (in addition to gaining deeper insights as to the MSOs plans at this time) was to demonstrate that VoIP could be used as a 'point solution' as in the case of overcoming scarce supply of upstream bandwidth in the HFC plant, and not necessarily for any other more far-reaching reasons at this time.

At the same time, it is a means for them to put in place a suitable solution, and represents a placeholder while obviating the need for expensive switched technologies in the early stages of voice deployments. I see this as allowing the operators to position themselves for the eventual full fledged VoIP, or Internet Telephony, in the time frames that you mentioned.

I too will await some further insights from Denver on this. Nice to have experts posting here, eh? smile

Thanks, Frank
