TATA AutoComp Systems to invest $680 mil in new JVs over 5 years. tacogroup.com Taco to invest Rs 3,000 cr in fresh JVs over 5 years Lijee Philip (ET) MUMBAI 24 OCTOBER TATA AutoComp Systems Ltd (Taco), the Tata group's auto components holding company, has planned to invest Rs 3,000 crore over the next five years in a slew of fresh joint ventures with global auto component companies. The new tie-ups will join some 12 Taco joint ventures already in place. At a debt-equity ratio of 1:1, the equity component would be Rs 1,500 crore. As the proposed joint ventures are 50:50 partnerships, Taco would be required to put in about Rs 750 crore. During the current year, Taco plans to invest around Rs 1,000 crore ($227 mil). The company has targeted a group turnover of Rs 18,000 crore in five years as against a current turnover of Rs 400-500 crore. Of this, 39 per cent will come from component manufacturing, 22 per cent each from supply-chain management and international operations. The balance 17 per cent is likely from the other SBUs (engineering and after-market operations). By 2005, domestic sales are expected to account for 40 per cent of turnover; exports the balance. Taco proposes to set up 40-50 joint ventures in its four strategic business units of component manufacturing, component design & development, systems integration and supply chain management. These include US-based Eaton (transmission & clutches for commercial vehicles), ZF of Germany (transmission for commercial vehicles), Magna Atoma Roltra (door latches and window regulators), UFI (filters), Irausa of the Antolin group (headliners, window regulators and door latches), Arrowcrest group (wheels), Hitachi (engine management systems), Conti-ntental Teves (braking systems) and Yazaki (instrumentation). Taco hopes to emerge as a global manufacturer through its joint venture partners by leveraging the low-cost, high-productivity engineering skills available in the country. In all, Taco plans to set up about 100 factories in and around Pune, Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi in a phased manner. Of the 12 joint ventures in place, Tata Johnson Controls, Tata Autoplastic Systems, Tata Toyo Radiator and Tata Ficosa are already in production. Three more - Yazaki Japan (wiring harness), Krupp Camford (suspension systems) and CHKK (chassis springs) - are expected to begin production by mid-'99. Taco was promoted by the Tata group in '95-96. Taco supplies components to Telco as well as to the other leading car makers such as Fiat, Honda, Maruti, GM, Hyundai, Toyota, Volvo and Daewoo.
