Popular Science Selects MetaCreations' MetaStream for Prestigious 1999 Best of What's New Award

CARPINTERIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1999--

Industry-Leading Streaming 3D Technology for the Web

Chosen Amongst Thousands of New Products, Technology Developments and Scientific Achievements

MetaCreations Corp. (Nasdaq:MCRE) and MetaStream.com today announced that Popular Science magazine has selected MetaCreations' industry-leading streaming 3D technology, MetaStream(tm), for its prestigious 1999 "Best of What's New" award.

This award is given annually to only 100 winners out of the thousands of new products, technology developments and scientific achievements reviewed by Popular Science. This year, MetaStream joins such other "Best of What's New" award winners such as Sony's AIBO Robotic Dog, the 2000 S-Type Jaguar, the first car to feature voice control, and Handspring's Visor, a cell phone, pager, GPS receiver and a Palm III personal organizer all in one.

Popular Science's highly anticipated 12th annual "Best of What's New" issue is available on newsstands today, and is featured on the Popular Science Web site found at popsci.com.

MetaStream is the streaming, scalable open 3D file format that enables the easy and affordable incorporation of 3D images into almost any Web site or interactive advertisement. Jointly developed with Intel Corp., MetaStream addresses the need for 3D files that stream efficiently over the Internet and automatically scale to the user's display and processing power for optimized viewing.

MetaStream opens a new realm of lifelike 3D on the Web, enhancing online shopping, education, entertainment and visual communication. The technology is currently distributed by Intel through its Web Outfitters service for Pentium(R) III users, and by Excite@Home within @Home 1.7, the new version of the @Home client software.

Additionally, Microsoft Corp. distributes major components of the MetaStream viewer within Windows(R) 98 SE. MetaStream is also available via free download from www.metastream.com/plugins.html.

"MetaStream is a catalyst for transforming the Web from 2D to 3D, bringing an entirely new era of visual communication to the Internet. With a true-to-life 3D medium with a global reach, the possibilities for online shopping, education, entertainment and human interaction are limitless," said Gary Lauer, chairman and chief executive officer, MetaCreations.

"For many years Popular Science magazine has showcased the most revolutionary scientific and technology achievements the world has ever seen. We're very pleased that this distinguished publication has selected MetaStream as a 1999 `Best of What's New' award winner."

"Popular Science magazine has inspired children and adults alike to look to science and technology to change the world for the better. Many of today's technology industry innovators grew up reading this magazine, which helped make the products of their imagination into the products of today's society," said Scott Krinsky, senior product manager of MetaStream technologies.

"Not so long ago, the idea of an optimized 3D Web experience for anyone, regardless of their connection or processor speed, was just a dream. Today, we have MetaStream, and it's exciting that Popular Science recognizes MetaStream as the technology that will revolutionize the Web experience."
