Uh oh. I've got some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that Len and Jean side with me that EMC is a gorilla. The bad news is that I can no longer say that virtually everyone I greatly respect disagrees with me. Since Jean and Len agree with me, I'm respecting them even more. :)

Jean, I think we disagree about EMC switching costs, but if you have implemented EMC you have a better knowledge base than I. So educate me, please.

Yes, EMC software is proprietary, but is it not interfacing with servers and apps using standards-based protocols (NFS, CIFS). Thus, ignoring the benefits of EMC software for the moment, is not switching away from EMC fundamentally as easy as copying the files from the EMC server to another server. Programs do not have to be modified.

Jean,

I appreciate your questioning the rah-rah mentality of this thread on Q, and hope somebody more knowledgeable than myself addresses. Perhaps it's like INTEL and AMD--others can make chips, but once one company gets there early and gains marketshare, they become a gorilla by default.

I also love EMC and don't understand why the stock is languishing of late. But I'm just long on it in a small IRA I have from some time ago.
