E, We may gain more insight into this matter, as Mt. Etna is once again awakening. I saw reports where none of the people who live on it's flanks are going to leave, as they know that God will protect them. We shall see.

it is about comfort for those who need it, and power or status for those who see in institutionalized religion a way to power and status

A fairly sweeping generalization, wouldn't you say? Your assumption is that all people of faith fall into one of these two categories. Some folks have read their history and come to their conclusions, irrespective of comfort or status.
