Dougerdad,

Good points. I wish I were sufficienlt technical to truly understand what would amount to a discontinuous innovation. And, the key argument against EMC being a gorilla is that they do not control discontinuous standards. But, I sometimes think that we on this thread confuse monopoly power with gorilla power. Cisco always did and still has competition-- though, all systems must port to them.

Nevertheless, EMC is gaining market share even as more players enter the market. Their software is unique and they fly in the face of gorilla strategy by taking great pride in customer service.

So, I admit that EMC does not fit the exact definitions as outlined in the book. But, we need to evolve our thinking. certainly Microsoft, Intel, and Cisco will not forever be the only gorillas.
