VERY OT

I had my own visit to eastern europe about 9 years ago on a "press trip" and ended up in Romania. Got involved in trying to help at the orphanages, met with many Americans who were adopting in the adopt-a-Romanian-orphan craze--the food sucked is putting it mildly, I began to look forward to these awful greasy pastries that I would buy and would be folded up in brown wrapping paper...altho I must say there was something both crushed and yet valiant about the culture, a deep vein of poetry and generosity in the people, but anyway...

I barely made it out of there--the one plane out every day was overbooked, finally I got out, weeping with joy I get on the plane and end up next to some huge former football-playing Texan who had adopted four boys. He and I would have had nothing in common but we jabbered on for hours, so grateful to talk to another American, and equally ebullient about the same pastries...he too had begun to look forward to eating them every day...

Nobody can ever convince me America isn't the greatest country to live in
