Unfortunately i am not an expert in the field either. I have been reading up a little bit. There is a lot of information on this and other message board that i am trying to digest. I am just trying to ride the excitement in these companies-----make some cash and reduce them to normal weighting in my portfolio. Right now i am very overweighted in fibre optics.

However, there does seem to be a good reasons to own JDSU and some smaller companies like Ortel as well----as long term investments. Growing industry etc.

You might want to direct your technical questions to James Fulop.

Good Luck

I'm no technical expert in this field either but I would agree with you about JDSU being the leader. But with demand for these optical components so huge, there must be room for a number of players. If it is a technical question, I would suggest asking some of the posters over on the JDSU thread. My understanding is that ORTL has a deeper bias in the analog fiber optics side as opposed to digital, but if you asked me what that means, I'd have to say I really don't know exactly (just being honest here.) According to some of the talk on the JDSU thread, JDSU's acquisition of Epitaxx, which specializes in receivers, has put ORTL directly in competition with JDSU.

But recent management changes, the whole sector on fire with great demand, and the Tellium holding still make this company an interesting play.

Oh, here is something that might interest you:

From UNPH's 10-K filing:
"With respect to CATV 1550 nm transmitters for supply to OEMs, the
Company's competitors include AEL, Harmonic Lightwaves, Kablerhydt, Ortel,
Synchronous Communications and PAi. Other CATV equipment suppliers may
also enter this market."

From ORTL's 10-K (under telecom equipment subheading):
"Company's products will compete with much larger, entrenched suppliers
including Lucent, SDL, Lasertron (a division of Oak Industries), and Uniphase."

Finally, a perusal of some of the postings on the Yahoo thread may be interesting, as there seem to be a few fairly informed posters there without the usual Yahoo babblings. Regards
