El: U R up awfully early! Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do see buying. Hey I bought MAT @12! Looking forward to adding to my KompaK holdings!!! At 18ish, tho, short term reward is minimal. But who knows, maybe KompaK can pull off a merger with WMI and create true one stop shopping!! M2

El: I think the "No.1" issue is a red herring. It is a catchy headline which will have market effect only until more significant numbers are available. Fascination with size was EP's weakness.

It doesn't matter whether DELL or CPQ is No. 1 in units shipped. But it does matter whether CPQ is at least keeping pace with the rate of growth in the sector, which it is. It matters whether it is improving profits on those units it does sell, especially by reducing costs, and we don't know about that yet, and I am concerned that it is not doing well enough. It matters that it is diversifying into other low-end consumer products, and more profitable high-end hardware, storage, software and services - which it is. Was it rudedog who suggested that those represent 60% of its revenues?

Also, I know it is hard for Americans to accept this - but the American market is not the the World market - arguably there is much more growth available in international markets than the US and as long as COMPAQ continues to match or better market growth internationally it will continue to be either the leading manufacturer of PC's or one of them.

At the end of the day all that matters is profits, not a place in some selective league. IBM has not been well-placed in the amrekt leagues for a number of years and it has seen better profits and stock performance than COMPAQ.
