I'll consider any company that comes up with a replacement for the light bulb. :) Seriously, I haven't had a chance to look at CREE's business model. I only had time to bookmark all the stuff about CREE before I went on vacation.

mike,
this may help.
the led light bulb exists. open the link. click on light bulb. scroll down near the bottom click on technical specs. check out the cost savings.
leotek.com

then go here

cree.com
click on led chips...read the applications.

i do not know what leotek uses for led material. cree's new super led's made from silicon carbide (SiC) are believed to be 10x brighter than any others. cree has a patented SiC crystal growth process that produces the highest volume and finest quality known. cree produces about 90-95% of the SiC in the world. they have orders in hand for all of the next year's production. they are rapidly ramping production several ways. they are building a major addition scheduled for completion this year. they are contracting for another huge plant to be built over the next 12-18 months. they own the land and expect to finance the expansion from cash flow.
i am told that each phase may triple production...in addition the ceo has said that he expects yield increase of up to 400%...combining these 3x3x4=36. that is a lot of production increase over a coupla years and all financed in-house.

cree has a huge relationship with siemens. i believe siemens owns osram (sp) the major european light bulb maker.

the power savings coupled with the increased life span of led lights will push them into mainstream lighting applications over the next 10 years. this is not pie in the sky. the products already exist.

i have other links and info on cree if you remain interested. i am trying to get to the cree shareholder meeting on 2 nov.

interestingly...the light bulb may not be the largest market for cree SiC.
