Hi Carl, Don't know that I'd call myself a high level guy, but here's what I was trying to show: Take a look at the procession of benchmarks across the various chips. Remember that Rambus, if it's going to provide the boost Intel and rambus have claimed, should show increasing improvements as clock speed increases. Alternatively, if latency is most important, Rambus will score lower as clock speed increases. I took all the benchmarks and normalized them by dividing each score by the average for that benchmark. I used inverses for the last two, since lower is better in those cases. Next I divided by clock speed, to control for clock speed. Remember that PC133 scores 3% to 5% better than PC100, all else being equal, so Rambus should be improving by more than that if there is any benefit to the technology. 600 600E 600B 650 667 700 733 10.1 1.4657 1.5727 1.6364 1.5253 1.5458 1.4963 1.5351 10.2 1.5744 1.5530 1.5547 1.5361 1.5327 1.5160 1.5127 11.1 1.4746 1.5506 1.5899 1.5197 1.5715 1.5037 1.5585 11.2 1.4217 1.5944 1.5047 1.5795 1.5773 1.5276 1.5545 12.1 1.2920 1.6482 1.3097 1.6246 1.6256 1.6095 1.6141 12.2 1.4832 1.5730 1.4832 1.5686 1.5460 1.5647 1.5420 13.1 1.3266 1.5871 1.4450 1.5252 1.6461 1.5635 1.6385 13.2 1.4430 1.5765 1.4522 1.5633 1.5843 1.5473 1.5839 11.4813 12.6556 11.9757 12.4422 12.6293 12.3285 12.5392 14.1 1.3685 1.6267 1.5566 1.5706 1.6138 1.0348 1.1369 14.2 0.8538 0.9746 0.9746 1.0284 1.0527 1.5003 1.4541 2.2223 2.6013 2.5312 2.5989 2.6664 2.5351 2.5909 Here are the score after controlling by 2% for the 133 bus: 600 600E 600B 650 667 700 733 11.4813 12.6556 11.7409 12.4422 12.3817 12.3285 12.2933 This is what I meant by virtually no benefit to rambus. This is what I was seeing in Sharkey's numbers. Not only is the performance of rambus inferior to that of PCXXX, (I'll grant it a benefit over PC100 at low clock speeds, but I doubt that makes the expense worthwhile) it doesn't scale as well as MHZ increases!
