This is interesting--- what exactly defines an icon and what gives this odd idea any merit at all? To me these are the people who are setting themselves up as the icons. I thought we were all very nice to COug at DAR, and he has dropped by Feelies in the past and I don't remember NOT being friendly to him. I like Coug, but he isn't interested in forming friendships or getting to know people and why they think and feel as they do about issues. He seems to see himself as a loner on a white horse, jousting at shadows. Actually he makes me smile - it's like watching my child with a stick in the backyard fighting imaginary villains.

I don't think anyone here is interested in being an icon. This whole thing seems very silly to me. SI is a place for people who work in isolated circumstances to have contact with others. Most of us are investors; some are writers or work at a computer all day. It is entertainment.
If it means a lot more than that, if it achieves an emotional impact on a life that extends much beyond the time spent here, then it is time to evaluate its place in that life. Because these people come and go for the most part. Just as in life, you are lucky to make one or two really close friends; the rest of the time we are just passing through each other's personal soap operas as bit players.

That some find it entertaining or amusing to spend the time tearing each other's throats out strikes me as peculiar. That some think there is a quixotic value in attacking perfectly innocent groups of people on unimportant coffee shop threads is only pitiful. I would imagine that those who need SI to feel superior must find their real lives very empty and powererless.

To say let's start a thread to go after people who have no real impact on anything important in your life seems awfully futile and silly to me! It says an awful lot more about the self-appointed iconoclasts than it does the "icons" they are "going after".
