Business Wire DELL EXTENDS LEADERSHIP IN WINDOWS NT STORAGE AREA NETWORKS; COMPAQ PROLIANT SERVERS NOW SUPPORTED WITHIN A DELL SAN BUSINESS EDITORS & HIGH-TECH WRITERS ROUND ROCK, TEXAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OCT. 25,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 1999--Dell Computer
Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL.O), the world's leading direct computer systems
company, today extended its leadership in Windows(R) NT Storage Area
Networks (SANs) with the introduction of new PowerVault(tm) SAN
products and capabilities, as well as support for Compaq(R)
ProLiant(R) servers within a PowerVault SAN.
With today's announcement, Dell is taking its first step in
supporting large heterogeneous SANs. Now up to 10 (12 for dedicated
SAN backup) Compaq ProLiant or Dell PowerEdge(R) servers, or a
combination of the two, can be attached to as many as four Dell
PowerVault 650F Fibre Channel storage systems and eight PowerVault
130T DLTtape(tm) library systems. This new capability provides up to
8.4 terabytes of fibre channel storage and up to 16.8 terabytes of
backup storage easily supporting data center applications such as
servers managing large databases.
To make selecting, configuring and deploying the new PowerVault
SAN easier for storage customers, Dell is introducing the Dell
PowerVault SAN Configuration Tool and Dell PowerSuites for Backup and
Restore Software. The configuration tool provides a graphical view
that simplifies SAN configuration and provides a detailed report that
can be used to order Dell PowerVault SAN solutions. The introduction
of software suites simplifies the selection of backup software for
PowerVault solutions. Products and capabilities announced today are
immediately available worldwide.
"Storage is strategic to our customers and it's strategic to
Dell," said Michael Lambert, senior vice president of Dell's
Enterprise Systems Group. "We're investing for the long-haul and will
continue to do that until we reach our goal of becoming one of the top
three storage providers in the world."
Lambert continued, "Today's announcement extends our NT SAN
leadership and starts us down the road toward support for
heterogeneous SANs. Next year, we plan to deliver a product based on
the Storage Domain Manager technology we'll acquire from ConvergeNet,
broadening this leadership throughout the entire open-systems storage
market."
Today's announcement enhances existing PowerVault capabilities
through new products that offer increased functionality. Information
on Dell PowerVault storage is available at
www.dell.com/products/powervault. New products and capabilities
announced today include:

*T

-- The PowerVault 51F, a new fibre-channel switch that customers
can have built to order with its eight ports configured with
any combination of copper, short wave optical or long wave
optical gigabit interface converters. The new switch has
higher availability features than its predecessor, including
redundant power supplies and fans, and a 1U form factor for
higher rack density.

-- OpenManage PowerSuites simplifies the ordering and
configuration of over-the-SAN backup solutions and supports
the PowerVault 130T automated DLTtape library or the
PowerVault 120T DLT autoloader library on the PowerVault SAN
for the first time. OpenManage PowerSuites tape backup
solutions bundle dozens of products from industry-leading
storage management software vendors into five tiered
solutions that address the range of enterprise storage
management and backup needs. Bundles being announced today
include offerings from Computer Associates(R) and Veritas(R),
as well as the addition of several new options.

-- The SAN Configuration Tool provides Dell customers with
services that previously were available only from a systems
engineer. Customers can graphically create a storage solution
for their enterprise and produce their own configuration with
equipment specifications online.

-- Two new QLA2200x fibre channel host bus adapters enable
customers to have connectivity to their external storage or
switch at speeds of up to 200 MB/seconds.

-- Clustering support for up to four 2-node Microsoft Cluster
Servers connected to the SAN via a fibre-channel fabric,
which increases the availability of servers in the network by
enabling numerous clustered servers to share the same SAN
fabric.

-- Zoning support, which increases security by enabling
administrators to segment the SAN and control access to
sensitive information on it.

-- The ability to connect data centers with backup as far as
10 kilometers away, improving customers' disaster tolerance.

Investment Protection

With the Storage Domain Manager(tm) technology Dell will acquire
from ConvergeNet Technologies Inc., Dell's current and future storage
systems will be able to connect to any Intel-based and most RISC-based
servers running UNIX, Solaris, Windows NT, Windows 2000, NetWare or
Linux operating systems. Dell announced a definitive agreement to
acquire ConvergeNet on Sept. 8, 1999. The transaction is expected to
be complete within 60 days of that announcement.
The ability to connect PowerVault storage systems to servers of
all types, regardless of operating system, protects customer
investments and provides a clear path to future technologies. This
capability also will enable Dell to address the entire open-systems
storage market, which International Data Corp. estimates will total
$38 billion by 2002.
Ranked No. 78 among the Fortune 500 companies and No. 210 in the
Fortune Global 500, Dell Computer Corporation is the world's leading
direct computer systems company, based on revenues of $21.7 billion
for the past four quarters. Dell designs, manufactures and customizes
products and services to customer requirements and offers an extensive
