That is, we're all connecting these things with huge idle CPU cycles to the net (and paying through the nose for the privilege). It just highlights how inane PCs are anymore (except James' apparently - even though he's professing via his browser to no longer use a compiler).

I'm not endorsing a 70 PC data-center, just the idea of distributed computing and it's benefit in reducing dependence on large central servers; a.k.a. central failure points/bottlenecks.

CPU cycles for the most part are wasted on desktops - especially when responding to you - but do you recommend people buy a $400 dollar thin client with zero apps available or buy a $500 PC/Windows box. As a result I say desktop CPU's cycles are relatively inexpensive considering the productivity gains of using it; greater variety, functionality of apps. App delivery over the web is NOT there ... so I can't buy into the thin client idea; none of the major web sites use applets as a means to access their system - not even Sun.
