I'm not so sure. The western invasion of France and Italy diverted a lot of troops and material from the eastern front. Without this diversion and western aid to the Soviets, I think the outcome of the war would have been uncertain.

Also I think the "nukes" shocked the emperor into asserting himself and surrendering. Without the use of the bombs, it would have take n a massive invasion to accomplish the same.

strongly disagree. there was very little chance of a Japanese surrender. Their defense of Okinawa showed a small slice of what it would be like. And from a military perspective the Kamikaze was very effective. It imposed large damage and casualties on the US in exchange for a lesser cost. No one in the US military thought it was a joke.
