Thu 28 Oct 99 News Release
Mr. Gilles Page reports
Bombardier Transportation has been awarded a $103-million ($70-million
(U.S.)) order by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority/Long Island Rail
Road (LIRR) for the supply of 34 electrical multiple unit (EMU) commuter
rail cars.
This order represents the exercise of an option included in the contract
awarded on May 24, 1999, for the supply of 192 electrical multiple unit
commuter cars and options for 808 additional cars. The exercise of this
option brings the total value of the contract to $758-million ($515-million
(U.S.)). The contract calls for the design, manufacture and delivery of new
M-7 commuter cars to begin replacement of the electric commuter car fleets
for both MTA commuter railroad agencies, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)
and Metro North Commuter Railroad (MNCR).
The M-7 stainless steel car bodies will be fabricated at Bombardier's La
Pocatiere, Que., plant, with final manufacturing and assembly at the
Plattsburgh, N.Y., plant. The M-7 vehicles incorporate the most advanced
technologies to serve the needs of the broad spectrum of passengers who
ride each day. The total vehicle is focused on optimizing customer safety
and comfort while ensuring excellent train performance and reliability.
