I'm struggling to understand "differentiated commodity". It seems to be an oxymoron. If an offering is differentiatable, wouldn't that mean it isn't a commodity?

Actually, dell's direct fulfillment model is the most significant reason they have gained market share. Some claim it can be duplicated, but no one has managed to do it as well as dell.

OT. I don't agree about Dell. There are many companies that have been quite successful selling "comodities". Coke, for one, comes to mind.

blankmind: Everything is a commodity. The trick is to differentiate it in one way or another. The best way is the Dell, INTC,MSFT,CSCO way - do it better than the other guy and keep doing it better and attach a brand name to it. JFD
