Someone help out a newbie. I've been reading about Level 3's ambitions for voice over IP and how this approach frees up bandwidth. Fine, I understand this concept. But this led to my confusion about how telcos presently route long distance voice calls (circuit switched) over their fiber backbone.

Question: When circuit switched voice calls are sent over fiber, does each call have a dedicated bandwidth on a DWDM system? If so, does 1 voice call tie up an entire channel on DWDM system?

Thanks.
