DURHAM, N.C., Oct 26, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Red Hat(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:RHAT), the leading developer and provider of open source software solutions, announced that Intel Corporation will bundle the Red Hat Linux operating system with Intel's server platforms the company markets through its recently created Internet Service Provider program.

The inclusion of Red Hat Linux with Intel's ISP program offers customers the power of open source software in the demanding Internet server environments in which it performs best. In addition, users of Red Hat Linux on Intel's Internet server platforms can rely on the comprehensive services and support of both organizations.

"The unique demands of ISPs and other enterprise server environments are well addressed by the stability and power of open source and the Red Hat Linux operating system," said Tim Buckley, senior vice president and COO of Red Hat. "Intel's rapidly growing ISP program and server building blocks, coupled with Red Hat's open source and open source services expertise makes this a promising collaboration for both companies."

"We anticipate a healthy demand for Intel-based Internet server platforms with the Red Hat Linux-based solution for our growing ISP sales program," said Scott Richardson, general manager of Intel's communications and Internet server division. "A key part of our ISP channel program is to provide a full range of products and services and thus offer a large menu of choices for ISPs and their business customers. The Red Hat solution gives our global ISP sales force another strong option for these rapidly growing providers."

Open Source Momentum

International Data Corp. (IDC) research states that Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, growing more than 190 percent in that year alone and capturing more than 15.8 percent of the 4.4 million revenue shipment server operating systems market segment. Additionally, IDC states that Red Hat Linux is by far the most popular distribution, preferred by 68.7 percent of U.S. Linux users.

According to a recent survey by Internet researchers NetCraft, Inc., the open source Apache web server runs 55 percent of the Internet's Web sites--out-distancing its closest competitor by more than thirty percent.

Red Hat's numerous alliances with industry leaders and the demand for Linux-based applications has created open source support from many of the industry's leading software and hardware manufacturers, including Compaq(R), Computer Associates, Corel, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Netscape, Novell, Oracle(R) and SAP(R).
