I didn't make my post clear. You see I already took into account that he only bought 1/3 of the subscribers for $3 billion. That is what worked out to be $1,608/subscriber figure.

And the going rate is something like $3,000-$5,000/subscriber as you have suggested. So it appears something is not quite right. Maybe the number of subscribers Telewest has listed is incorrect. I got it off their website. They said they have 5,600,000 customers. I believe they also said they may be delivering Internet service to them, but I'm certain that is an error. Only a few must be getting the service.

So I guess I'll wait to see if any further details come out to clarify this.
