''Four years ago, we set out a vision for the networks of the future and have worked relentlessly to become the world leader in communications networking,'' said Lucent Technologies Chairman and CEO Richard McGinn. ''Today, we are focused on continuing our growth and share gain in the face of light-speed market changes, increasingly complex networks, and fortunately a wealth of opportunity.
''The realignment is intended to mirror the way we are approaching customers today -- with converged network solutions,'' said McGinn. '' We are sharpening our focus on high-growth areas -- such as data networking, optical networking, wireless, semiconductors, e-business and professional services -- while speeding our growth in international markets. And, we will also be aligning our management structure to increase productivity and accelerate our response to customer needs.''
Establishes Four Core Businesses
Lucent is organizing into four core businesses, which will operate under one brand and standard of quality, and be supported by the technology of Bell Labs: Service Provider Networks, headed by Executive VP and CEO Patricia Russo; Enterprise Networks, headed by Executive VP and CEO William O'Shea; NetCare Professional Services, headed by Executive VP and CEO John Drew; and Microelectronics and Communications Technologies, headed by Executive VP and CEO John Dickson. Russo, O'Shea and Dickson will report directly to McGinn; Drew will report to O'Shea.
''These core businesses will address specific markets and allow us to approach customers in a faster and more integrated fashion,'' said McGinn. ''The leaders of each of these businesses have a keen understanding of their marketplaces and have demonstrated the speed, response and creativity our customers demand.''
Service Provider Networks will consist of Lucent's Optical Networking, Switching and Access Systems, Wireless Networks, and Communication Software businesses, Lucent's business focused on the needs of cable television operators, those parts of InterNetworking Systems focused on service providers, and the global service provider sales and service organizations. It will also include products, offers, sales, distribution, installation and maintenance for service provider customers worldwide.
Enterprise Networks will consist of Lucent's current Business Communications Systems and Government Solutions, plus those parts of InterNetworking Systems focused on enterprise customers and the channel that supports SYSTIMAX(r) cabling systems. It will be responsible for both voice and data solutions for enterprises, including the U.S. Government. It will include products, offers, direct sales and distribution, indirect channels for various Lucent products, and installation and maintenance for enterprise customers worldwide.
NetCare Professional Services will consist of Lucent's current Professional Services business, which recently merged with newly acquired International Network Services. This business will deliver the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of network professional services and software solutions to help both service provider and enterprise customers deploy next-generation voice and data networks.
Microelectronics and Communications Technologies will consist of Lucent's current Microelectronics business, Network Products Group, the New Ventures Group, and Intellectual Property Division. It includes Lucent's industry-leading communications semiconductor business and other businesses which focus primarily on equipment manufacturers worldwide as key customers. Tying this new alignment together and managing best-in-class business disciplines will be new Executive VP of Staff Operations Robert Holder. Holder will focus on ensuring high-performance productivity and cost structures across all our operations. He will have direct support of the corporate centers, including strategy and business development and the integration of newly acquired talent and technology. Holder will report to McGinn, as will Executive VP and CFO Donald Peterson and General Counsel Richard Rawson.
Global growth outside the U.S.
Sales outside of the United States have grown close to 50 percent in the past year under the leadership of Ben Verwaayen, currently Chief Operating Officer, who is being named Vice Chairman today. Reporting to McGinn in his new role, Verwaayen will continue his focus on establishing closer relationships with key Lucent customers outside the U.S. and creating business development opportunities with global service providers.
''Lucent's rapid growth outside the U.S. can be attributed in many ways to Ben's unparalleled knowledge and experience in the global communications industry,'' said McGinn. ''With nearly two-thirds of our growth opportunity lying outside the U.S., Ben's role becomes critical in forging the links and delivering the networks that these global carriers require.''
Next-generation Communication Architecture and Bell Labs
To provide strategic direction across the landscape of new and emerging technologies, Dan Stanzione, currently Chief Operating Officer and President of Bell Labs, has decided to assume a new role as special advisor to Rich McGinn. In this new role, Stanzione will focus on developing Lucent's strategy for its overall product portfolio and next-generation communication network architecture. He will also advise Lucent's core businesses on the development of emerging technologies.
''Dan's new role will allow him to concentrate on his passion -- future technology and network designs that can transform the communications world,'' said McGinn. ''As we integrate our acquisitions and develop the technologies that will define the next generation of communications networking, his leadership, vision and creativity will once again help shape Lucent for continued success.''
As Stanzione moves to his new role, Bell Labs will remain at the heart of Lucent's innovations under the direction of Arun Netravali, currently Executive Vice President of Research, who has been promoted to President of Bell Labs. For the past four years, Netravali has led Lucent's development of fundamental software and technologies underlying broadband networking and e-business. He will continue to help speed research results into products and services, and will be a champion for attracting and retaining key technical talent across Lucent. Netravali will report to McGinn.
