Re: "Guess what, they just dropped four DOW stocks that are not performing and added 4 high powered stocks."

Good point. The DJIA and the S&P 500 are exclusive clubs. "Only the strong survive" in these indices. Companies that don't grow are dropped and replaced by companies that do.

Best wishes,

Hi Mohan

<<I doubt if we will see 10,000 in the next 20 years! By then, the DOW should have to replace at least 15 companies with growth prospects. There is no way the current 30 will take us to 10k under the current over-capacity situation and the liquidity crunch that is unfolding.>>

Hmmmm...but your statement turned out to be dead wrong. We hit 11K and then changed 4 components of the DOW. Still a long way from needing to change 15 components before it hits $10K.

One might argue that when the DOW was created, not many good minds were writing software or designing and building chips with 7.5M transistors on them. Perhaps the DOW SHOULD reflect where a nation's strength is focusing its energies?

Funny, I had IBM and HWP in my portfolio as heavy weights in 1980 and they got added to the DOW. In early 1990's I added INTC and MSFT and now they got added. Perhaps AMAT, BOWG and LRCX will be added in another 5 or 10 years to the DOW? -VBG-
