But when in 1945 did Kurchakov achieve that chain reaction? I specificly used the end of the war in Europe to give me a bit of clearance. -g- Also achieving a chain reaction is a long way from actually working on a bomb.

1949 is not an issue since it falls outside of the scope of a decision on whether to fight the Soviets in 1945. And clearly Soviet scientists led by Sakharov accomplished a lot. But don't underestimate the amount of assistance espionage provided in overcoming obstacles.
