NOKIA: Nokia supplies SMS Center solution for P&TLuxembourg's LUXGSM network OCT 26, 1999, M2 Communications - Nokia has signed an agreement with P&TLuxembourg, a new GSM customer for Nokia, for the incorporation of the Nokia short message solution into its LUXGSM network. The Nokia Artus SMS Center, a member of the Nokia Artus product family, is connected into P&TLuxembourg's LUXGSM network using a MAP (Mobile Application Part) interface, further enhancing its short messaging capabilities. The application is implemented across their nation-wide LUXGSM network. SMS (Short Message Service) will be the key bearer technology for most new voice and data value-added services, including WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) services. WAP is the uniform technology platform with consistent content formats for delivering Internet and Intranet based information and services to digital mobile phones and other wireless devices, and is a key step in the evolution to 3rd Generation mobile technology. "P&TLuxembourg considers the acquisition of the SMS Center as a step towards WAP and other future data services and enhanced revenues, " said Marc Rosenfeld of P&TLuxembourg, "It will also improve the overall quality of short messages services." "Nokia is pleased to begin this new relationship with P&TLuxembourg," said Pekka Salonoja, Vice President of Nokia Networks, Messaging and Service Platforms, "Operators starting with products from the Nokia Artus product family can make the move towards being a value-added service provider in a cost-effective way. Like any other value-added service, wireless data can be an important differentiating factor on which to secure customer loyalty by offering a wealth of wireless intelligent personalized services." Organised by law in 1992 as a public enterprise, P&TLuxembourg operates postal, payment and telecommunications services. By the end of the year 1998, P&TLuxembourg occupied more than 2.600 employees, of which the telecommunications division accounted 800. The transmission network and telephony switching is entirely digitalized. ISDN service is available on the whole national territory. The international telephone and intelligent network switches are linked by a secured optical fibre network with each of the neighbouring countries. By the end of 1998, the number of telecom main lines amounted to 293.000 for fixed telephony (density: 68,3%). After 7 years of LUXGSM activities, P&TLuxembourg and its service providers are proud of having 120.000 subscribers.
