I think the move is just to let the dow be more representative of the technology companies that make up the equities market.

The effect of adding and dropping individual stocks results in survivor bias - the Dow will keep rising due to the new blood, leaving a lot of idiots with the belief that all stocks will rise in the long run. Its obviously a logical move but the S&P 500 is a much better guage of the market.
