Mark, I am a fundamentalist and don't watch patterns. The only thing I can figure is that the stocks dip after the underwriter stops manipulating, er, supporting their prices as part of the deal.

If you like the long term growth story, then adding a third when it is down is certainly relatively superior to paying up. But I'd have to know the story to know whether or not the current price is fair or not.
